Dicentra have always had a prominent place not only in our garden areas around the Nursery but also in our seasonal designs we exhibit at major horticultural events in the UK during April and May.

Their elegance, soft mounds of ferny foliage in bright greens, buttery yellows and glaucus grey-blues, and movement they add to a design narrative is without doubt a positive visual experience. Add to this their dainty heart-shaped pendent flowers along the softly arching stems in colours of bright pink to deep red and clear white, they are simply a must for any part-shaded area with reliably moist soil.

They are always a plant of choice for us to mingle in and amongst our Camassia in our own garden areas and in our exhibits. Other excellent companion plants are Pulmonaria, Aquilegia and Ferns. A clump-forming hardy perennial that can range in height from 20cm to 1.2m depending on the variety, they die back completely and it is always a thrill to glimpse the clusters of new shoots in early spring each year.

Lamprocapnos spectabilis and Lamprocapnos spectabilis ‘Alba’ are included here on this page as although they are no longer named Dicentra, most will still refer to them as such, or simply as ‘bleeding hearts’.
