UVULARIA
(U-vu-lar-e-a)
We are proud to be the National Collection Holder of Uvularia.
It is a small family of plants with just a handful of species – an unusual ‘woodlander’ that in our opinion is not as widely used in planting schemes as it should be, Uvularia prefer damp shady growing conditions.
Emerging foliage in spring may be susceptible to slug damage so take steps to protect it. After flowering allow foliage to die back naturally and tidy up afterwards. We leave our attractive dried foliage in situ until new shoots emerge in spring as it provides shelter for beneficial insects such as ladybirds. Some perennial plants die back gracefully and continue to add structure to planting schemes and Uvularia is certainly in that category! Their triangular-shaped seed pods are a fascinating sight. They will benefit from a top dress of leaf mould or similar each Autumn/Spring.
